In Memoriam 

It is with great sadness, that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved past president Dr Corne de Leeuw on Tuesday, 29 January. Our association and the international QS profession have lost a great leader, a dear friend and valued colleague.

Corneheld a BSc(QS) cum laude and a DSc(QS) degree from the University of Pretoria and was awarded a DSc (honoris causa) in 2002 by the same University.

He was registered as a professional quantity surveyor (PRQS) with the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession, as a professional property valuer with the South African Council of Property Valuers Profession (SACPVP) and a professional project manager with the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Profession.

Corne served as president for;

  • Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS)
  • South African Council for Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP)  
  •  African Association of Quantity Surveyors (AAQSA)
  • South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA)

Industry awards Corne received include the following;

  • Gold medal of the Chapter of South African Quantity Surveyors (now the Association of Quantity Surveyors) for student performance (1957)
  • Gold medal of Honour of the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors for his contribution to the enhancement of the quantity surveying and property development practice in South Africa (1999)
  • Regional Director’s Award for the International Cost Engineering  for his contribution to the cost management profession in Africa (2006)
  • Distinguished International Fellow award in recognition of significant contributions to the cost management profession (2008)
  • Award from the African Association of Quantity Surveyors (AAQS) for contributions to quantity surveying in Africa (2008)
