Merit Award for Service to the Quantity Surveying Profession

This award is made to an African Quantity Surveyor, in acknowledgement of distinguished service to the quantity surveying profession. The activities upon which the nomination is based shall have produced a body of work that consistently created a positive and significant regional, national or international impact on the quantity surveying profession

Any Institutional Member, Practice Member or Council Member of the AAQS is entitled to make a formal nomination, by 30th June of the year in which the award is being made. Such nomination shall be supported by a motivation and signed in support by at least ten individual quantity surveyors who are members of an AAQS Institutional Member organization. On receipt of a nomination, the AAQS president shall appoint an ad hoc committee comprising a minimum of three Council members which shall consider the nomination on its merits and may or may not make a recommendation to the Council whereupon the Council shall accept or reject the recommendation.

Merit Award for Outstanding Service

This award is made to an individual or organisation, in acknowledgment of exceptional services rendered by them. The activities upon which the nomination is based shall have produced a body of work that consistently created a positive and significant regional, national or international impact on African society, the AAQS, an Institutional Member of the AAQS, or the quantity surveying profession generally.

Any Institutional Member, Practice Member or Council Member of the AAQS is entitled to make a formal nomination, by 30th June of the year in which the award is being made. Such nomination shall be supported by a motivation and signed in support by at least ten individual quantity surveyors who are members of an AAQS Institutional Member organization. On receipt of a nomination, the AAQS president shall appoint an ad hoc committee comprising a minimum of three Council members which shall consider the nomination on its merits and may or may not make a recommendation to the Council whereupon the Council shall accept or reject the recommendation.

Africa Young Achiever Award

In an effort to promote the industry to young professionals, the AAQS recognizes the contribution Young Quantity Surveyors make to the industry and the future of the profession. This category is only open to registered professional quantity surveyors / members of AAQS Institutional Member organisations. Nominees must be younger than 35 years of age on the 30th June of the year in which the awards are made.

Nominations must be made by National Institutional Members by the 30th September of the year in which the awards are made. The nominee must be available, should he / she receive the award, to attend the AAQS Council / General Assembly meeting where the results of the process will be made publically known, and if necessary, make a presentation within any seminar attached to this meeting.

The nomination must consist of a motivation of the outstanding achievements of the nominee under the following headings:

Technical Achievement on Projects / equivalent tasks
Post matriculation educational achievements
Recognition such as awards received
Contribution to sustainable (social, economic and environmental) development
Papers and presentations delivered
Community involvement and social responsibilities
Leadership ability of the nominee and his or her contribution to building the image of their employer
organization(s) and the quantity surveying profession in general

The entry must include written consent from the nominee and head of their employer organization. The entry must include a well-presented and neatly compiled report or motivation that is sufficiently comprehensive in describing the nomination. Where relevant, drawings, graphics, tables and other supportive material may be included. The report has to, in addition to the headings listed above, contain as one of its main headings, a clear motivation by the entrant, highlighting the merits of the nomination in terms of the competition’s awards criteria. All material which may be submitted in hard-copy format should be accompanied by an electronic version.

A high resolution (minimum 1MB) photograph (head and shoulders) of the nominee in jpeg format must be included in the submission. Note: The nominee must avail him/herself for an interview with the adjudication panel if requested to do so – for practical purposes, this is likely to be conducted via electronic means.

On receipt of a nomination, the AAQS president shall appoint an ad hoc committee comprising a minimum of three Council members, or members of the AAQS Education, Training and Research Board / AAQS Awards Committee, which shall consider all nominations on their merits and shall make a recommendation to the Council, whereupon the Council shall accept or reject the recommendation.

The AAQS reserves the right not to make an award in the event of the awards committee making a recommendation of this nature.

The AAQS intends soliciting sponsorship of this award to cover travel and accommodation costs of the eventual winner to attend the awards ceremony

Africa Graduate Gold Medal Award

In an effort to promote the industry to young professionals, the AAQS recognizes the contribution young Quantity Surveyors make to the industry and the future of the profession. This category is only open to graduates from universities in countries where an AAQS Institutional Member exists. One student nationally may be nominated who has obtained their degree in the year preceding nomination, whose academic achievements are of outstanding merit and whose personal qualities promise to positively contribute to the quantity surveying profession. Nominations must be made by National Institutional Members by the 30th September of the year in which the awards are made. The nominee must be available, should he / she receive the award, to attend the AAQS Council / General Assembly meeting where the results of the process will be made publically known, and if necessary, make a presentation within any seminar attached to this meeting.

The nomination must consist of a motivation of the outstanding achievements of the nominee and include the following documentation:

a) Marks obtained by nominee in each subject for each year of study

b) Class average marks for each subject in the corresponding years

c) Number of students in the nominee’s class year by yea

d) The final year marks for each subject in the corresponding years

e) Testimonial from the Head of Department of the Tertiary Institution awarding the degree

f) Documentation stating:

1 Extramural activities

2 Contributions to community and social responsibility

3 Details of personality/character

4 Leadership qualities

Only graduates from “Honours” level Programmes (as defined in AAQS Accreditation Policy documentation), i.e. of minimum 4 year’s duration / 480 credits (4800 nominal study hours) may be considered for this award. Such graduates must have:

(i) obtained a credit-weighted average of at least 75% in those modules required for the qualification; and

(ii) successfully completed all modules in the curriculum at the first attempt and without recourse to supplementary examinations; and

(iii) completed the degree in the prescribed minimum time.
